The losses of energy in shunt reactor at predefined voltage and frequency needs to be measured. To arrange measurement of losses in high voltage test of shunt reactor can be difficult. By measuring the losses of the shunt reactor at voltage lower than system voltage of the reactor this task can be achieved. This measured loss value then multiplied by the square of the ratio of rated current to the current of the reactor at applied reduced test voltage to obtain the loss at rated voltage.
Wrated = Wmeasured (Irated/Imeasured)2
We can not rely on wattmeter to measure the loss value of shunt reactor because if its low power factor, instead of bridge method of measurement can be adopted for better accuracy.
This doesn't mean that the test can segregate the losses in various parts of the reactor. To avoid, correction of test result for a reference temperature, When the average temperature of the winding becomes equal to the reference temperature it is preferable to take the measurement.
The electrical measurements can be achieved with the electrical instruments of high precision rate. The electrical equipment suppliers supplies these instruments to the market, the person with optimum knowledge of the digital instruments exactly know what product to buy for which kind of measurement.
